Vesanto is an internationally known nutrition consultant and speaker, academic instructor and writer. She has taught nutrition at the University of British Columbia and at Seattle’s Bastyr University and has been a lecturer for academic nutrition courses at universities, community colleges and nursing schools.
Her speaking engagements and consulting have taken her across North America, the U.K. and Europe where she has given presentations to dietetic organizations, health professionals, addiction treatment groups, youth groups, and vegetarian societies. A regular consultant for the Government of British Columbia, Vesanto has worked with the British Columbia Corrections Depart- ment and the Vancouver City Health Department. In addition to private consultations, she has worked with Dr. Dean Ornish Retreats, the Gillis Cardiology Clinic, Khatsahlano Medical Clinic, and other health care facilities.
Vesanto is the co-author with Brenda Davis, R.D. of a series of books on plant-based nutrition: The New Becoming Vegetarian (2003), Becoming Vegan (2001), and Becoming Raw (2010). She has also co-authored The Food Allergy Survival Guide (2004), The Raw Food Revolution Diet (2008), Food Allergies Health and Healing (2010) and Raising Vegetarian Children. Her latest book, Cooking Vegan was co-authored with Joseph Forest in 2012.
In addition to her published books, Vesanto has written numerous articles for vegetarian magazines and has a column in Canada’s Common Ground Magazine.
Professional memberships include the American Dietetic Association, Dietitians of Canada, College of Dietitians of British Columbia, Washington State Dietetic Association, Vegetarian Dietary Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association, and Vegetarian Nutrition Network of Dietitians of Canada.
Vesanto Melina’s undergraduate training was at the University of London, England and the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This led to a B.A. in Home Economics with specialization in Nutrition. Graduate work included a Master’s degree in Nutrition at the University of Toronto, Ontario and two years of graduate course work in Adult Education at the University of British Columbia.
